What Is an Undertone?

Undertone is different from skin tone. Skin tone is how light or dark you are, and it shifts with the seasons and the sun. Undertone is the hue underneath that doesn’t change: it’s why two people with near-identical skin tone can look completely different in the same shade of lipstick.

Most people land clearly in one of the four categories. The fastest way to check is to compare a few signals at once: how your wrist veins read in daylight, whether gold or silver jewelry looks better against your skin, and how your skin reacts to the sun. Our undertone quiz runs through all of them in under a minute.
